📢📢 sniffIRdrone UBuniv Project Update! 📢📢GSS team members John Fuller and Andrew Hale successfully presented at the SniffIRdrone Attract project mid-term review in sunny Geneva this week, along with other key members. This EU funded project has been running for 12 months, and GSS demonstrated its ability to measure multiple gases rapidly at single ppm levels. This capability is incorporated to a small battery-powered package mounted on a drone-based measurement system using novel combinations of low-cost lasers and photoacoustic techniques. The concentrations of the measured gases can then be related to the odour emitted via a model developed by another part of the SniffIRdrone team. The system is targeted at measuring the odours for wastewater plants and measuring gases rapidly on a moving drone allowing easy 3D mapping of concentrations. The team have already received commercial enquiries for the product. #project #team #GSSNews #GSS

Thrilled to share that our paper, "Informative Trajectory Planning for Air-Ground Cooperative Monitoring of Spatiotemporal Fields," has been published in the esteemed IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering! 🚀🌍This research dives deep into cooperative monitoring, addressing complex spatiotemporal fields such as air pollution, forest fires, and oil spills with the dynamic duo of UAVs (drones) and UGVs (ground vehicles). By leveraging the unique strengths of these vehicles, we've introduced a novel scheme that not only boosts efficiency but also directly tackles the challenge of trajectory planning with a dash of AI magic. This includes a model-free reinforcement learning strategy for the UGVs and a model predictive control approach for the UAVs. 🛩️🚗We've validated the feasibility and effectiveness of our scheme through numerical simulations, yet the journey from simulation to real-world application (Sim2Real) remains a thrilling challenge. Looking ahead, we plan to focus more on physical experiments, aiming to achieve even more fascinating outcomes!🔗: https://lnkd.in/gSUS5tRzDOI: https://lnkd.in/g_rRfHS9

Interesting works on pedestrian modelling by Laura C. Echeverri, Jean-Michel Auberlet, and Jean-Paul Hubert. As pedestrians can stop walking at any time and restart suddenly, the authors propose an improvement of the Optimal Reciprocal Collision Avoidance (ORCA) model to anticipate and to avoid livelocks in the simulations. This work was done in the framework of the INFRAPED project with the support of the French CD94, the Labex “Futurs Urbains”, the Mobilites Urbaines Pedestres” group.Laboratoire Ville Mobilité Transport (LVMT), PICS-L, Laboratoire DEST, Cosys Département, Université Gustave Eiffel#INFRAPEDproject ; #ORCApedestriansteering

Enable My Team (EMT), in collaboration with Hexagon Geosystems is developing an innovative tunnel fit-out scan-to-plan automated solution. This is a continuation of the innovation Enable My Team (EMT) deployed on Crossrail (https://lnkd.in/e6XF4N8b (C) Crossrail Ltd)Utilising high accuracy LiDAR scans to generate point clouds the tunnel, Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon Cyclone 3DR automatically removes noise from the tunnel, leaving only the tunnel lining visible, seamlessly integrating and uploading the cleaned data into ATLAS by Enable My Team (EMT).ATLAS leverages advance feature extraction algorithms to identify segment boundaries and key areas of interest, including grout holes.By applying predefined rules for bracketry spacing, the system automatically identifies optimal drill hole locations for efficient tunnel fit-out tasks such as installing cable trays, pipes, or overhead line equipment (OLE).This digital twin of the tunnel streamlines the process of drilling fixings, ultimately enhancing efficiency and delivering significant time and cost savings to expedite tunnel readiness for operation.Jim Douglas will be presenting the collaborative solution at the World Tunnel Congress 2024 (WTC 2024) this month with a published paper to follow. We would love to see this adopted by projects such as HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd, Lower Thames Crossing and National Grid’s London Power Tunnels, plus many more.If you wish to find out more information, please contact help@enablemyteam.com.#enable #EMT #ATLAS #Hexagon #Leica #tunnel #tunnelling #tunnelfitout #AI #digitaltwin #automation

Recently, the development of UAVs, or drones, has intensified, but one major challenge that surfaces is the noise generated by their propellers. To overcome this issue, it is essential to explore the concept of low-noise propellers constructed with sawtooth serration on their trailing edges as a promising solution. This paper investigates the effects of sawtooth serration on UAV propellers, specifically in the context of horizontal take-off and landing configurations. Using ANSYS Fluent, extensive testing will be conducted to determine the most effective serration geometry for the propeller. The outcome of this research aims to contribute to the development of quieter and more efficient UAVs, addressing the noise reduction challenge and fostering innovations in UAV technology. From the simulation result, the highest noise intensity reduction is approximately 3.101% lower than the non-serration propeller.
