Do you want to buy a classic vehicle, get your hands dirty, and restore it? While many budding restoration enthusiasts choose muscle cars for this endeavor, some appreciate the classic trucks of yesteryear. There are American icons from Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, and more.

If you’re looking for classic truck parts for your restorations, we at JEGS have conceivably everything you’d need. ? Let’s go through the best trucks to restore for a beginner. We’ll look at the easiest truck to work on, easiest engines to work on, and provide some tips to get started.

Easiest Trucks To Restore

What’s the easiest truck to restore? That’s a question that we can help answer, after much research via the internet, as well as word-of-mouth from customers of ours who engage in restorations. There are offerings from Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, and International Harvester. Let’s get into it.

Ford F-100

Ford’s venerable F-Series of trucks has been around since 1948, and one variant in particular, the F100 stands out. First introduced in 1953 as the second generation of F-Series trucks, the F100 was rated at ½ ton of payload and could be gotten with a variety of in-line six or V8 engines, coupled to manual or automatic transmissions. These are sturdy powerplants that are also simple to work on, although they don’t produce earth-shattering power. These trucks are relatively basic, being fifties vehicles, and luxuries extended to optional power steering and heating, with later generations offering air conditioning and stereo systems. Of course, you can turn it into a resto-mod if desired, and make it as comfortable and luxurious as desired.

Chevrolet C10

General Motors’s answer to Ford’s F-Series, the C/K Series saw production across four generations, from 1960 to 1991. The C-models denoted rear-wheel drive, while K-models sported four-wheel drive. A basic C10 from the first or second generation is a relatively easy vehicle to work on, as, like the Ford, it’s a simplistic thing, and there’s little that can go wrong. Powertrains here were again in-line sixes or V8s, coupled to manual or automatic transmissions, once again, not horsepower monsters, but reliable and dependable runners. Creature comforts? Heaters and AM radios were your typical lot, but air conditioning started to appear in later generations. If you want to make it luxurious and cozy, the resto-mod route is your best bet.

Dodge Power Wagon

Dodge’s Power Wagon was produced between 1945 to 1980, and earlier variants sported a suitably wartime-like appearance with their rounded hoods, running boards, podded headlamps, and external spare wheels. These make for great resto-mod platforms as well, and are extremely tough and simple. You could have two or four-wheel drive variants, with, again, choices of in-line six or V8 engines. Power Wagons are surprisingly capable off-road in four-wheel drive guise, as some variants sport low-range transfer cases, and even power take-offs, making them ideal for a spell of farm use. Of course, these features will add to the restoration efforts (and final bill), but once fully functional, they make for interesting demonstration and conversation pieces.

International Harvester Pickup

Known as the International Harvester Pickup, this large pickup truck from the defunct International Harvester brand is another exciting option for a truck restoration. Done right, they have incredible road presence, coupled with the relative rarity of International Harvester vehicles these days, and make for ideal head-turners and conversation pieces. They were also built tough but basic, and there’s ample room under the hood to work on the engine. Transmissions were usually manual, but automatic options appeared late in the range.

Chevrolet El Camino

Here’s an interesting one. Chevrolet’s El Camino is not a truck in the traditional sense but a Coupe Utility. That means it’s built on a car rather than a truck platform, and sports an integrated cab and bed. El Caminos are considered to be quite desirable for restorations, so you may pay a higher price to purchase one, but they share many parts, including engines and transmissions across the Chevrolet range, making them easy to maintain. Unlike the other choices here, the El Camino also intersected the muscle car segment during its heyday, so you can find a rubber burner if desired.

Tips For Getting Started

Chosen your truck? Great! Here are some tips to get started on your restoration journey.

  • Learn everything there is about your truck’s make and model. You can try sourcing workshop manuals, speak to experts, check out internet forums and reach out to the manufacturer too.
  • Map out a path for your restoration. Identify which tasks you are going to achieve first and which ones can be done later.
  • Identify what you can do and what you’ll need professional help for. Don’t think you can do it all. For example, if you’re a novice and your truck needs an engine rebuild, you better leave that one to the professionals.
  • Ensure that you have an ample set of tools in your home garage before you start your restoration, including any special tools that you may need to acquire from the manufacturer or third party to work on your specific make and model of truck.
  • Have a budget, which you will likely over-run, and a timeline, which, once again, you will probably over-run, but formulating these will keep you on track.
  • Don’t be disheartened if things aren’t going well at the start. Restoration is not easy. Take a break and come back later.
