Can I use tap water to make coffee? ›

Most North Americans and Europeans use tap water to make coffee. If you live in San Francisco or Oslo, that's perfectly fine! Your tap water meets SCA guidelines. But if you live in Phoenix, Indianapolis, or countless other cities, your water is likely too hard.

Scientists and the experts at the Specialty Coffee Association have determined that soft water makes the best coffee, and we suggest you follow that advice. If you're perfectly happy with your current coffee, whether it's made with tap, filtered or bottled water, then stick with it.

Tap Water. If you're looking for the easiest and most economical method to make your tea, tap water is the way to go. Although the quality of it varies across different areas, rest assured that modernized countries have water that is safe to drink and that is stringently tested.

The kind of water you choose can affect the taste and aroma of your coffee. Consider this: tap water contains more impurities, which can result in an acidic or metallic taste. Do you want that mixing with your high-quality coffee beans?

The Water. The water you use is very important to the quality of your coffee. Use filtered or bottled water if your tap water is not good or has a strong odor or taste, such as chlorine. If you're using tap water, let it run a few seconds before filling your coffee pot, and be sure to use cold water.

The ideal water for coffee is soft and contains no chlorine, about 150 ppm TDS, and a pH of 7.0. These characteristics help water extract the maximum amount of flavor out of coffee beans as it percolates through them.

First, keep in mind that a cup of coffee is 98% water, so the type of water you use will impact the overall taste and consistency. Remember, selecting your water with a mineral content of at least 150-200 parts per million and heating it at a temperature between 195 -205℉ is crucial.

Metals – Aging plumbing systems can allow high levels of certain metals, such as copper, iron, zinc and manganese, to leach into drinking water, often giving it a metallic or medicinal aftertaste.

Distilled water is potable and therefore can be used to make coffee, but take caution: because the minerals have been removed, distilled water is not as tasty as tap water and it has a tendency to leach minerals from whatever it comes in contact with, including your coffee brewing equipment.
