How to Store Homemade Dinner Rolls

Before you store your homemade rolls they need to be allowed to fully cool. If you are going to eat them in 2 days or less you can keep them in an air-tight container or bag on the counter or bread box. For longer storage it is better to keep them in your refrigerator for up to a week.

Can You Freeze Homemade Dinner Rolls?

Yes you can. To freeze your fresh baked rolls, first allow them to completely cool. Put them in heavy duty plastic freezer bags, getting out as much air as possible before sealing.

When you’re ready to use them allow them to thaw on the counter and reheat in your oven.

How to Reheat Dinner Rolls

It is best to reheat rolls after they’ve come to room temperature.

IN THE OVEN: The best way to reheat your homemade dinner rolls is in the oven. Put the rolls on a cookie sheet in the middle rack at 350°F for 4 – 6 minutes. Watch them carefully so they don’t burn!

IN THE MICROWAVE: To reheat your rolls in the microwave you’ll place them on a microwave-safe plate, cover them with damp (not wet) paper towels or clean kitchen towel so that the entire plate is covered. Cook on medium for 30 seconds, no more than 45 seconds or they’ll be too chewy to enjoy.

FAQs

When to put egg wash on dinner rolls? ›

In baking, many recipes call for an egg wash to be brushed on the baked goods before it goes into the oven. The purpose of this is to give the final product a golden brown color that is slightly shiny. Egg washes can make the final product look more professional, a bit crispier, or act as a binder."

Why did my dinner rolls turn out like biscuits? ›

Too much flour, or not the right kind, could be to blame. Dough made only from flour with a high or even average amount of protein (like bread flour or all-purpose flour) can become tough from overmixing. Protein gives bread structure in the form of gluten—the more you mix and move the dough, the more gluten you get.

How many ounces of dough for a dinner roll? ›

First, weigh all of your dough using a digital kitchen scale. Divide that number by 12 (about 2 ounces for each roll if I use my standard dinner roll recipe).

How to keep homemade dinner rolls fresh? ›

Let the rolls cool completely on a cooling rack. Always remove rolls from the pan immediately after baking to prevent moisture buildup that can cause sogginess. Once cooled, place in an air tight container or ziplock bag.

Do you egg wash bread before or after proofing? ›

An egg wash can be applied to shaped bread or rolls before or after proofing, but it should always be added before baking. When applying after proofing, use a very light touch with the brush to avoid deflating the bread.

How long to let rolls rise before baking? ›

The dough rises in about 1-2 hours in a relatively warm environment. Punch down the dough to release the air and shape into rolls. Let the rolls rise for about 1 hour. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

What happens if you add too much flour to dinner rolls? ›

Avoid adding too much extra flour to the dough.

These ingredients slow down gluten development and can make the dough a little sticky. Your instinct might be to add extra flour; however, any extra flour will create a denser, tougher roll instead of the light, fluffy, soft dinner roll we want.

What happens when you overproof dough? ›

underproof dough will spring back completely correctly, proof will spring back slowly and only halfway, and overproof dough won't spring back at all. after baking, the underproof dough will be dense and deformed. while the dough that was ready will be fluffy and light. and the overproof dough will be flat and deflated.

What kind of pan is best for baking rolls? ›

Cast iron can be used on the stove top or directly in the oven. If you don't have a large 11 inch cast iron pan, you can use a glass baking dish sprayed with nonstick spray. A 9×13 size would work well. It's best to have the rolls all touching each other when you arrange them in the pan, and I'll tell you why…

Why are my homemade dinner rolls dense? ›

If your dinner rolls aren't fluffy it could be because of one of two reasons. Either, you added too much flour or you possibly used all bread flour. Alternately, not giving your dinner rolls enough time to proof and get puffy before baking could yield dense rolls.

Can I use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour for rolls? ›

With that said, you can substitute bread flour with all purpose flour. This type of substitution is better reserved for tender baked goods like dinner rolls than sourdough, bagels, or pizza, which are prized for their chewier crumbs and crusts.

Can you freeze homemade dinner rolls? ›

Place them in a pan and freeze. Once frozen, bag them airtight and stash in the freezer. The day you want to serve them, take as many rolls as you want out of the freezer; place them in a pan; and let them thaw/rise for 4 to 5 hours or so.

Should homemade dinner rolls be refrigerated? ›

If you're only a day or two away from your party, you can also just refrigerate either the dough or the shaped rolls — they'll keep just fine without even needing to go to the freezer. Whichever method you end up using, three days in the fridge or a month in the freezer is about the maximum that I recommend.

What is the best way to reheat homemade dinner rolls? ›

Didn't eat all of your rolls at dinner tonight? No problem. Warm rolls are always the best and your leftovers don't have to be eaten cold! Simply wrap rolls in foil and place in a 350º oven for 5-7 minutes.

Do you use egg wash to seal egg rolls? ›

We use an egg wash (1 beaten egg and 1 tablespoon water) to seal our egg rolls. However, our vegetarian egg roll can become a vegan egg roll if you use a cornstarch slurry as a sealer (in addition to eggless wrappers).

Should you brush dinner rolls before baking? ›

Butter basting: Rolls can be brushed with butter before, during, or after baking. While it doesn't brown the surface as much as egg wash will, it does promote browning and adds a lot of flavor.

How to get rolls to brown on top? ›

What are the best techniques for creating dark color and shine on bread crusts? To create dark, burnished crusts on their loaves, professional bakers brush milk, egg, or water onto the surface of the risen dough before baking.
