A raw diet is one that consists of natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and some grains. Food may not reach a temperature of more than 116 degrees Fahrenheit to qualify as raw according to website Raw Guru. While observers of a raw diet may eat rice, only certain types are viable and the rice must be prepared by sprouting.

Rice cannot be eaten in its hard raw state. It must be hydrated, and in the case of the raw diet, sprouted. Both white rice and wild rice will not sprout. The best kind of rice is short- or medium-grain brown rice. You can use either the jar or cloth method.

Things You'll Need

  • Brown rice

  • Glass jar

  • Mesh screen lid

  • 2 cotton washcloths

  • Bowl, flat-bottomed

Tip

Canning jars are best for the glass jar method. Drainage screens can be purchased, or cut from plastic mesh. Thomas E. Billings, contributor to Living-Foods.com, recommends Wehani rice as the least-bitter option.

Warning

Use light-colored washcloths to prevent the dye from seeping into the rice. Keep in mind that sprouted brown rice is often bitter.
