What message does the story the sand castle convey to us? ›

Despite the dreams and hopes that live in building a sandcastle, there is much that exists which is "very dirty and dry." The most beautiful of creations remain in the subjective and are unable to find much in way of externalization. Such a statement about human futility becomes one of the basic messages of the novel.

But, if you are interested in a film that successfully portrays the life's of all people affected by war, even if the story line does not center on the most brutal and violent ways, this is a film worth watching.

True to Roessner's own experience in the Army's Civil Affairs Unit, good intentions get undermined by insurgent violence.

The film ends on tragic yet hopeful note involving something Noah does for Lauren after she is reunited with her family. There is also a connection between Alison and Noah earlier in the film that has consequences for the movie's denouement.
