Rebel Moon 3 has yet to be confirmed by Netflix, so we'll wait to see whether Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scargiver is a big enough success for there to be a Rebel Moon – Part 3.

The sequel did top the most-watched movies list on Netflix in its opening weekend with 21.4 million views. However, that was down slightly on the first movie's 23.9 million views, so it might depend on how well Rebel Moon 2 sustains its viewership.

In the meantime, Zack Snyder has been planning Rebel Moon 3 – and beyond.

"We have definitely been working on a Part Three, as far as the story goes. We definitely know where we're all headed – we've known that for quite a while, to be honest," he told Forbes about the future of the series.

Snyder added to Radio Times that we could be getting four or six movies, depending on whether he splits future stories into two movies like with the first two films.

"We absolutely have the story all set, we did all that work. We wrote a treatment for the movie so we'll see how we go ahead," he noted.

So with that in mind, here's everything you need to know about a potential Rebel Moon 3.

Rebel Moon 3 potential release date: When will Rebel Moon Part 3 be on Netflix?

As mentioned above, Rebel Moon 3 has yet to be confirmed by Netflix, so we don't have an official release date as of April 2024.

There were only four months between the first two Rebel Moon movies, but we're in for more of a wait if we do get a third movie. While Snyder is planning it, he's not expecting to film it next.

"We're waiting to have the totality of these movies come out, including the director's cut. I'm probably going to make this other little small movie in the meantime, and before we decide what to do with more Rebel Moon movies," he told GamesRadar+.

Snyder has spoken about several movies over the past few years, so that "other little small movie" could be anything. It probably rules it out being Army of the Dead 2 which might have to fit in somewhere too.

He has at least started writing the third movie, according to co-writer Kurt Johnstad. "Zack has already started writing because he's like that. I think he's already written the first 30 pages of movie three," he told ScreenRant.

Either way, it does suggest that filming won't start on Rebel Moon 3 until at least 2025 – and if anything, a bit later than that.

So we could be looking at 2026 for a new Rebel Moon movie at the earliest, if it even gets confirmed.

Rebel Moon 3 cast: Who could be back for Rebel Moon Part 3?

We don't have official cast announcements since Rebel Moon 3 has yet to be confirmed, but we can take an educated guess.

All of the surviving rebels from Rebel Moon 2 will be back, so that's Sofia Boutella as Kora, Djimon Hounsou as Titus, Staz Nair as Tarak, Elise Duffy as Milius and Cleopatra Coleman as Devra Bloodaxe.

Boutella seems keen to return, even though she confirmed to The Direct that she hadn't yet spoken to Snyder about a third movie: "It'll be quite fun to go back on set with Zack because we all love being part of this project so much."

Sadly, Michiel Huisman's Gunnar and Doona Bae's Nemesis died during the battle on Veldt so unless we see them in flashbacks, they won't be back in the third movie.

We can also expect to hear Anthony Hopkins again as Jimmy, while Veldt villagers like Sam (Charlotte Maggi) and Aris (Sky Yang) – formerly a Motherworld soldier – will likely be back too.

On the villain side, Fra Fee should return as Regent Balisarius. Ed Skrein probably won't be back as Atticus Noble, but Noble has survived death once already in this series so you can never fully rule him out.

Rebel Moon 3 plot: How does Rebel Moon 2 set it up?

Rebel Moon 2 ends with the big revelation that Princess Issa is still alive and out there somewhere, so the rebels vow to track her down and continue to fight against the Motherworld.

It's unclear exactly how Princess Issa survived Kora's assassination attempt or whether she's still the person who can end all wars and bring peace to the Motherworld. But it will likely be the main focus of the third movie, if it happens.

"Balisarius is back on the Motherworld, and Issa is somewhere else in hiding. They have this thing called the Order of 12, which are the 12 original Jimmies that protected the royal family, and they were all destroyed, except for one called Bartholomew," Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter about the revelation.

"So [Issa and Bartholomew] are probably hiding somewhere in the universe. The story of movie three would be tracking her down and finding out how they can use the victory at Veldt to create a coalition of planets that were on the edge of rebellion, but have now seen the example of downing a dreadnought.

"Maybe now there's an opportunity. It’s a chink in the armour. That's really what it is."

The second movie revealed more of the backstories of the rebels, but we still don't know too much about the villains, such as Regent Balisarius, beyond what Kora has told the rebels about her time with the Motherworld.

It means we could expect further flashbacks in a potential third movie. "I needed to ask [Zack] about Balisarius's backstory. We see fragments of his story in these first two films and a few flashbacks," Fee told GamesRadar+.

"And I'm playing an older version of myself, so there's obviously the young story to be told…"

Snyder added to The Hollywood Reporter: "If you were to make the rest of the stories that I have laid out, you'd certainly have a Balisarius percentage increase. Exponentially, you'd start getting more and more Balisarius until it's just Balisarius and Kora, probably.

FAQs

Why did Zack Snyder use 4:3? ›

The Big Picture. The 4:3 aspect ratio choice in Zack Snyder's Justice League is unusual but adds both practicality and creative charm to the film. Modern televisions cannot replicate the immersive experience of watching an IMAX film, making the aspect ratio shifting in films distracting on home video.

Why is the Snyder Cut so much better? ›

Another key difference between the films is that, in the Snyder Cut, the audience gets to see a lot more of the Flash and Cyborg. One of the biggest surprises of the Snyder Cut is how much Cyborg was cut for the 2017 release. Snyder had previously said that Cyborg was the heart of the movie, and he was not wrong.

What was Snyder's original plan? ›

Zack Snyder's original Dceu plans included a built-in end and reboot, allowing the actors to move on to other projects and DC to recast iconic roles. Snyder's planned trilogy of The Flash movies would have set up the Dceu's main villain, Eobard Thawne, and Flashpoint would have reset the universe.

Why is Snyder Cut black and white? ›

Director Snyder himself said that his "ideal version" of Justice League would be to show it in black and white in an IMAX format. The Snyder Cut's HBO Max format — in boxed 4:3 aspect ratio — presents the movie in such a fashion because Snyder shot the film using that more square framing, and...

Why is Justice League 4 hours? ›

Speaking to Deadline, he said telling the stories of six main characters, and making sure they are "fully realized," required a super-sized runtime. "I mean, literally, I think it has a lot to do with what the ask is. The ask is to unite these characters characters or six characters into a team.

Why was Zack Snyder cut from Justice League? ›

Its script underwent major changes before and during production between 2016 and 2017. In May 2017, Snyder stepped down during post-production following the death of his daughter, Autumn Snyder, and Joss Whedon was hired to finish the film, completing it as an uncredited director.

Why do critics hate Snyder? ›

His detractors accuse him of making visually bleak, narratively muddled movies. Unlike Nolan, whose brooding Batman trilogy was praised by critics, Snyder has grown accustomed to tough reviews. “Snyder is an overkill director,” Wesley Morris wrote in his review of Man of Steel.

Why does Snyder Cut look weird? ›

Zack Snyder's Justice League is bucking an industry trend, presenting itself in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio as opposed to a more standard widescreen format. It's absolutely weird, and it feels "wrong" because we're not used to it, but it's not actually all that strange.

What is the longest movie ever? ›

1 'Logistics' (2012)

Daniel Andersson and Erika Magnusson's experimental Swedish film Logistics answered both questions when it came out in 2012. Logistics is the longest movie of all time, taking a whopping 35 days to end.

What was Steppenwolf plan? ›

What was Zack Snyder's plan for Superman? ›

According to Snyder, as he wanted Henry Cavill's trilogy to come full circle, his conclusion would see Superman being destroyed and again turning back time to deal with Darkseid.

What was Zack Snyder's first DC movie? ›

Snyder made his feature film debut with the 2004 remake Dawn of the Dead and has gone on to be known for his comic book movies and superhero films, including 300 (2007), Watchmen (2009), Man of Steel (2013) and its upcoming sequel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).

Why does Zack Snyder's Justice League have black bars? ›

Because of IMAX. While very few people, if any, will ever watch the “Justice League” Snyder Cut on any big screen, much less IMAX, it's nonetheless true. While most IMAX screens tend to be a bit wider, the biggest ones — the “true” IMAX — tend to have an aspect ratio between 1.32 and 1.4 or so.

Why is Justice League gray? ›

Justice League: Justice Is Gray Upholds the Power of Black and White Filmmaking. Zack Snyder's Justice League: Justice Is Gray provided an added visual dimension to the story while defending black and white film in the modern age.

Why is Superman black in Snyder Cut? ›

Snyder went on to say that the "classic" Superman moment doesn't really happen in this movie. He also explained that the black suit in his cut of the movie is a "great time delineator" that allows audiences to see where in the timeline they are with the character.

Why is the Justice League Snyder Cut not full screen? ›

Films shown on a theater screen are usually in the aspect ratio 1.85:1 or 2.39:1. The Snyder Cut, though, was planned for IMAX – and those screens are a different size to regular theater screens, hence the 4:3 format.

What is the wrong aspect ratio for Starz? ›

One of the downsides of the app is that Starz resizes the aspect ratio for movies. That means if a film was originally shot with letterboxes and a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1, Starz sometimes crops it to fill up your entire screen. That makes some movies look distorted.

Why is BvS in 4:3? ›

Yet upon seeing the alternating aspect ratios on BvS, Snyder came to the conclusion he'd like all of Justice League to have a uniformly square frame that could fill an entire IMAX screen.

What ratio is Snyder? ›

S1 and S2 are called "Snyder's ratios". The subscript provides a convenient reminder of the type of marriage to which each ratio applies: S2 when both par- ents are dominants, S1 when one parent is dominant and one recessive.
