Seattle police chief dismissed from top job amid discrimination, harassment lawsuits

  • AP

Seattle's embattled police chief has been dismissed. Mayor Bruce Harrell made the announcement Wednesday, saying he met with Police Chief Adrian Diaz on the previous day and they agreed the chief should step down. He will be reassigned within the department. KUOW reports that the move comes about a week after Capt. Eric Greening filed a lawsuit alleging that Diaz discriminated against women and people of color. Greening is one of at least a half-dozen officers to sue the department over such allegations since Diaz became chief. Diaz has vehemently denied the allegations. Former sheriff Sue Rahr will replace him on an interim basis.

  • AP

Goalkeeper Laurina Oliveiros, defenders Julieta Cruz and Eliana Stábile and midfielder Lorena Benítez left the squad Monday ahead of two internatinal friendlies against Costa Rica. They claimed the Argentinian soccer federation disrespected them and told them they wouldn’t be paid expenses for playing in the two games against Costa Rica. The first of those games is on Friday.

Celebrations in Greece as Olympiakos beats Fiorentina 1-0 for first European title

  • By DEREK GATOPOULOS - Associated Press

Olympiakos has won Greece’s first European club title by beating Fiorentina 1-0 after extra time in the Europa Conference League final. Ayoub El Kaabi dived to nudge in a last-gasp goal in the second period of extra time with fans erupting in celebration after a lengthy wait for a VAR check for offside. The Morocco striker is the competition’s top scorer. He struck in the 116th minute of the match after meeting a cross from Santiago Hezze to decide a game that had looked destined for a penalty shootout following an energetic but largely risk-free encounter at AEK Arena. Olympiakos coach Jose Luis Mendilibar secured a second straight European title after winning the Europa League with Sevilla last season.

Michigan willing to spend millions to restore Flint properties ripped up by pipe replacement

  • By ED WHITE - Associated Press

The state of Michigan says it’s willing to step in and oversee property repairs at 1,900 homes in Flint. Water pipes have been inspected or replaced at those homes but the grounds remain a mess. In March, a judge found Flint in civil contempt after missing deadlines to get the work done. A water switch in the city in 2014 caused lead to leach off old pipes, spoiling the drinking water system. More than 10,000 lead or steel pipes have been replaced. Flint returned to a Detroit-area water supplier in fall 2015.

At Sen. Bob Menendez's bribery trial, prosecutors highlight his wife's desperate finances

  • By LARRY NEUMEISTER - Associated Press

Prosecutors at Sen. Bob Menendez's bribery trial have showed jurors hundreds of texts, emails and phone calls that show his girlfriend-turned-wife's desperate financial situation before New Jersey businessmen came to the rescue. Prosecutors elicited the evidence through the testimony of an FBI agent for a second day Wednesday as they sought to show that the Democratic senator conspired with three businessmen and his wife, Nadine Menendez, in a bribery scheme that enriched the couple with gold bars and tens of thousands of dollars in cash. The Mendezes and two of the businessmen have pleaded not guilty. The third pleaded guilty.
