In praise of the bread free option – the oatcake! (2024)

Every day I get clients that are looking for a bread/wheat free option and my reply is always buy as many boxes of oatcakes as you can carry. You see the problem with ANY type of bread is the following –

1. Lots of calories – there are about 80-100 calories in a slice of bread and about 40-50calroies in an oatcake. Also condiser that a bagel or croissant can have 3-4 times the number of calories than a single oatcake and have very little fibre.

2. It’s easy to eat lots of bread – yes it tastes good, you put your butter on it and before you know it there are four slices down your goblet. It’s what I call ‘the pringles effect’ i.e. once you pop you can’t stop. most high carb foods have this effect so it’s better to pick a slow digesting, wheat free option like oatcakes.

3. Bloating – it’s amazing the number of clients that I have come off all wheat and suddenly they are less bloated and have more energy. Overall, the vast majority of people could do with staying off bread in particular and if they do have bread they should make their own. Much of the problem is in the way bread is now made today (not enough time give to leaven/proof), the modifications to the flour used, addatives, soya flour added etc

I recommend you do what a client of mine did last week – he went into the local big supermarket and bought 33 boxes of Nairns oatcakes. I was wondering why I could never find any in the shops! By the way Tescos are the cheapest for oatcakes (€1.20-1.30 a box) and everyone from health food shops to regular supermarkets stock them in the cracker or wheat free sections.

The perfect bread alternative

You will then take quite a few months to run out of them and give you no excuses for grabbingthe bread. In regards to taste, they aremore like a cracker and notallfoods are going to work well on them like you might have used withbread but you have to experiment and findwhat works best for you. Having these as an option does NOT mean you can eat a pack at a time (there are 4 handy packs of 6 oatackes in each box). Eat the right portion for you NOT because there is only 1-2 left in the pack so you might as well!

Peanut butter and oatcakes - perfect match

Personally I enjoy them with tuna on top, salmon, nut butters (peanut, almond, cashew nut butter), cheese or just plain old butter (never use those plastic spreads, butter is best).

Pop a small pack in your bag everywhere you go and you can always have a healthy, easy snack.

Post up a comment on what you like to put on your oatcakes.

All the best, Dominic
