Whispers that beloved Dirt Dessert might be COMING BACK (2024)

It’s the discontinued beloved chocolate-flavoured dessert that triggered a protest out the front of Brownes Dairy in Perth and it might be finally coming back to supermarket shelves.

The iconic Yogo Dirt Dessert offered so much chocolatey joy to kids growing up in the 2000s and excitement has been brewing this month with whispers it’s coming back.

For those unfamiliar with the Brownes delicacy, it had a base of chocolate crumble “dirt” and soft gooey marshmallows covered with chocolate Yogo.

It was deleted in 2012 due to a low sales rate and super fans of the gooey delight have been petitioning for the company to bring it back ever since.

The Facebook page Bring Back Yogo Dirt Dessert has 2300 followers and has been calling on Brownes for the product to make a comeback and it seems they have finally listened.

A Brownes spokesperson told PerthNow they have been working hard to make Yogo lovers wishes come true.

“The people of WA have been demanding this product returns for years. Ever since the product left shelves we’ve been receiving requests to bring back Dirt Dessert,” he said.

“We’ve been listening, we’ve been tinkering with the recipe, and we’ve been working incredibly hard to give the people of WA what they want.

“More will be revealed very soon.”

The spokesperson said another reason the product was discontinued was because the company no longer had the machine in Perth to make it.

“When the decision was made to stop selling the product the machine was also sold off. Whilst we’ve had numerous people in WA ask us to bring this iconic dessert back, we actually couldn’t,” he said.

“Our factory is also now gluten and wheat-allergen free, so we can’t remake the cookie crumble in our Balcatta facility as we’re completely allergen-free now (except milk products of course).”

Not only was there no machine but there were also “serious” marshmallow issues as the original Dirt Dessert marshmallow provider is no longer in existence.

In 2019, fans went to the next level and protested at the Balcatta facility after a petition started by avid fan Caroline Elisabeth gained thousands of signatures.

Brownes Dairy chief executive Natalie Sarich-Dayton—who was the sales and marketing manager at the time—said Dirt Dessert would be back “for a trial period” if enough supporters showed up.

At its peak, West Aussie devoured 12,000 tubs of Yogo Dirt Dessert each week.

Yogo can still be bought in 170g tubs in a variety of flavours including chocolate, strawberry and vanilla custard.

The original Yogo chocolate flavour can also be purchased in a 500g tub.
